I always offer clients a free initial consultation to discuss the project, to fully understand what starting information the client already has, and to give an idea of how long (or short!) the research might be. For more details, please contact me.
For general research, I charge an hourly rate. I am happy to help with all sizes of research tasks - I don't have a minimum number of hours - if I can find what you need within one hour, that's all you pay for.
My hourly rate is £18 per hour
If you are looking for a substantial amount of research, it may well be worth considering one of my family history packages:
Each surname line £100
'Full' family tree (4 surname lines) £320
One surname line covers the birth, marriage (with details of spouse) and death of each member of a distinct line within your family tree, for example: your father, your father's father, your father's father's father, etc, back until the early 1800s. Typically a 'full' family tree would consist of 4 surname lines (one stemming from each grandparent)
for each of these packages, you will receive a CD which includes:
- a full report listing all sources
- a narrative version of your tree, listing ancestors' dates of birth, marriage, and death, places of origin, residences, and occupations (in PDF format which you can print out and send to other members of your family)
- a GEDCOM file of your tree (this is a special computer file which can be imported into most family tree software programs, should you wish to continue the research yourself)
- saved images of all census entries found for your family from the existing censuses (1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901)
- transcriptions, where necessary, of census entries, for ease of reading, with explanations of any unusual words (such as obscure 19th century trades and occupations!)
- Google map printouts for locations listed
- details of any extra information uncovered during my research
- a report of suggested next steps for your research
- for an additional cost of £10 you can receive printouts of all these files
If I need to purchase any birth, marriage or death certificates in order to confirm identities of ancestors in your family tree, I will contact you before doing so. Unlike most other professional genealogists, I do not make a profit on ordering birth marriage and death certificates, but just pass on the exact cost of the certificate from the National Register Office (a standard certificate costs £7).
If you are thinking of buying family tree research as a present, you can purchase gift vouchers from £35.
(This can be especially useful if you are short of time, or if you do not want to spoil the surprise by asking lots of questions!)
Family tree - starter kit £100
Are you interested in doing your own family history research, but don't know where to start? If you can provide a full name and location for an ancestor from around the 1900s, I can provide at least 2 birth or marriage certificates, census returns for 1901, and advice on what steps to take next.
For local photography, I charge the same hourly rate, plus £0.40 per mile travel from central Cambridge.
Please be aware that in some circumstances (such as illegitimacy or emigration), a trail may prove impossible to follow. If this happens, you will only be charged for the work I have already done.
I accept payment by cheque or by Paypal. |
